Affordable Housing Key To Proposed Community Hub In Orillia

County of Simcoe purchased former high school property for a future regional services hub

Affordable housing is a key component being proposed for the development of a Community Hub at a former high school property in Orillia.

County Council Committee of the Whole was briefed on the consultation process at its meeting today.

The County of Simcoe purchased the former Orillia District Collegiate and Vocational Institute property on Borland Street East in 2018 with the purpose of developing a future regional services hub.

A staff report suggests a two-phased approach with the first phase to include approximately 100 affordable housing units for seniors, families and individuals, as well as various community services such as Ontario Works, Social Housing County Offices and Children and Community Services.

Phase 1 would also have offices for community agencies to rent and a licensed child care site.

Staff indicated they hope to bring back findings from the feasibility study in the spring for Council’s review and also continue to engage stakeholders and the City of Orillia.

Work would tentatively start in 2021 with the potential build of phase 1 over a two year period.
