Barrie woman in Africa to begin trek up Kilimanjaro

She’s battled heart disease for most of her adult life, but starting tomorrow Deb Bobechko of Barrie starts climbing a new mountain – Kilimanjaro – in Africa.

More than 19 thousand feet high, she’s hoping to raise a dollar for every foot she climbs. All of which will be donated to the Youth Haven shelter.

Debra Bobechko is climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for Youth Haven, a shelter for people under 25 experencing homelessness.

“Even if I don’t summit, every step is a success. That’s what the youth need to hear. Every step they take to becoming a successful adult is a success. Individual success is their definition, not somebody else’s,” said Bobechko.

She arrived in Africa Tuesday to make final preparations for her climb, which she hopes to begin on Thursday.
