Barrie City Hall fields about 350 complaints on newly established COVID-19 enforcement line

Many calls were to complain about provincial essential services list

Most people calling the City of Barrie’s new COVID-19 Enforcement Line are doing so with questions about provincial regulations.

The City of Barrie says it fielded 230 calls and emails to its newly established line over the weekend, with by-law officers receiving around 120 while out on general patrol. The majority of questions coming in were from businesses or complaints related to the new provincial government’s essential business list. The revised list took effect Saturday night.

Some calls were related to the new city by-law enacted late Friday that allowed by-law officers to hand out fines of up to $100,000 for those violating physical distancing guidelines.

The Enforcement Line is also receiving questions from residents about what visitors to other properties and whether that was permitted. Health care experts, including the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit recommend against having visitors into your home.

City Hall says complaints about restrictions on playgrounds and other recreational equipment were minimal, however, some residents called to note trails are not large enough to maintain a safe two-metre distance. Residents are reminded to step aside when passing someone on a trail.
