Barrie Public Library Connects Local Businesses with Social Service Agencies During Pandemic

Library will post donations from business to a communication hub that agencies can access

The Barrie Public Library has created an online communication hub to connect local businesses’ supplies with social service agencies in need during the COVID-19 pandemic. The assistance is being provided as part of the City of Barrie’s Social Support Task Force.

Businesses can contribute cleaning supplies, toiletries, non-perishable foods and other practical items. The items must be registered with the Library at connect@barrielibrary.ca Available items are updated by Library staff to the communication hub on a regular basis. Local service agencies log in to view and select items needed, then contact the contributing business to arrange for pick up or delivery.

This is evolving into a vital service, as support agencies experience an increase in those accessing their services.

“We know that as the global pandemic continues, these difficult times in our community will hit our vulnerable populations the hardest,” explains Library CEO Lauren Jessop. “The Library is all about providing information and resources and we are proud to help our community in this way. Providing an online tool allows us to streamline the process and get essential items into the community where the needs are most critical”.

The Social Support Task Force includes representatives from the shelter system, social services, charities and other organizations that help vulnerable populations. It was initiated by the City of Barrie in March 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
