Bradford man victim of gift card fraud

Asked to buy Google Play cards

A Bradford man is out several thousand dollars after falling prey to the ‘gift card’ fraud.

He told South Simcoe Police he received an email, he thought was from an online payment company, saying his account had been compromised. There was a number to call to reset his password. When he called, he was told to purchase Google Play cards in order for the verification to be processed.

He complied, thinking he would be reimbursed, realizing later that he had been had.

South Simcoe Police say it’s the second report of this kind this week. They advise companies do not ask for gift cards for payment or to reset passwords. If it happens to you, hang up and report the incident to the police.
