SUMMARY:March Mullet Warrior Campaign
DESCRIPTION:Have you always wanted a mullet? Now you can rock a business-in-the-front-and-party-in-the-back look for a good cause through a haircut fundraiser hosted by Georgian College.\nParticipants – who can also opt for a simple haircut of their choosing – can sign up for a pay-by-donation haircut March 24 at Georgian’s Barrie Campus. They can be a Trim Trooper – get a simple haircut and make a donation that day\, or a Mullet Warrior – choose a mullet cut style and raise money with the promise that you’ll rock it until the end of March. All Mullet Warriors will get a coupon for a free reshape cut in April.\nAll the money raised will go to support Georgian’s collaborations with Elizabeth Fry Society Simcoe Muskoka and The Global MINDS Collective. Specifically\, it will help fund programs aimed at empowering youth and young adults:\n\nGeorgian and Eliabeth Fry’s Shift Disturbers Changing Course program aims to support local youth facing barriers to postsecondary education or meaningful employment through a unique motorcycle makeover pilot program.\nGlobal MINDS Collective’s mindfulness teacher training certification will be integrated into the Changing Course program.\n\nThese programs provide participants with essential skills and tools to navigate life's challenges\, build resilience\, and create a pathway toward a successful and fulfilling future. Participants engage in workshops\, mentorship\, and hands-on learning experiences that foster personal growth and emotional well-being.\n“This fundraiser is more than a haircut — it’s a way to support youth in gaining the skills and guidance they need to move forward in life. Every dollar raised helps provide experiential learning\, mentorship\, and experiences that make a real difference in their future\,” said Nicole Norris\, Director\, Social Innovation at Georgian.\nLast year\, this campaign raised $5\,000. This year\, the goal is to top that by getting 25 Mullet Warriors and 50 Trim Troopers signed up for a fresh spring cut.\n\n\nHow to get involved\n\nGet a haircut March 24 between 1 and 7 p.m. Sign up online!\nRoom A109 (A building)\, hair studio\, Georgian’s Barrie Campus\, One Georgian Dr.\, Barrie\, ON.\nAre you a stylist? Contact mulletortrimcampaign@gmail.com to participate.\nDonate online to support the Changing Course program through Georgian’s Social Innovation department.\n\nBy supporting this event\, community members can play a direct role in fostering positive change by helping young people feel empowered\, develop essential life skills\, build resilience and foster a sense of belonging.\n“We hope our dedication to building emotional regulation and mindfulness-based skills will assist in the sustainability of essential tools for participants to navigate conflict with greater awareness and the self-care tools to support their resilience and well-being\,” said Natalie Matias\, Director of Learning and Development\, Global MINDS Collective.\nFor more information about the event\, contact mulletortrimcampaign@gmail.com\nTo learn more about the Shift Disturbers Changing Course program\, visit shift-disturbers.com.

SUMMARY:World Down Syndrome Day Flag Raising at City Hall
DESCRIPTION:A person with Down syndrome has three copies of the 21 st chromosome instead of two. This is not a disease or disorder\, it is a naturally occurring genetic condition that is present in approximately 1 in 800 people born in Canada\, and it is universal across race and gender. The effect of this extra chromosome varies from person to person. Down Syndrome may result in speech impairments\, cognitive impairments and physical developmental delays. Many individuals with Down Syndrome live well into their 50s and 60s and lead fulfilling lives. People with Down syndrome attend school work\, and contribute to society in many ways. \nEach year on March 21st\, we come together to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day\, a day officially recognized by the United Nations in 2012 and In Ontario in 2016. The date 03/21 holds particular significance\, as it symbolizes the triplication of the 21st chromosome\, a characteristic of Down Syndrome\, also known as Trisomy 21. World Down Syndrome Day is a day to raise awareness\, promote understanding\, and show our support for individuals with Down Syndrome. \nJoin in the celebration and wear your most colourful\, quirky socks! Let’s stand together to celebrate diversity and inclusivity. Share your photos on social media with the hashtag #WDSD to spread the love and raise awareness. \nTo celebrate World Down Syndrome Day this year\, the Down Syndrome Association of Simcoe County is holding a flag raising at Barrie City Hall (70 Collier Street\, Barrie) at 4PM. We would love to invite the local media to come and cover this event and help us share awareness about World Down Syndrome Day with the community. \nShould you have any further questions about World Down Syndrome Day or the Down Syndrome Association of Simcoe County\, please feel free to reach out.
