SUMMARY:Prisoners' Justice Day Event
DESCRIPTION:Prisoners' Justice Day is a solidarity movement that takes place annually on August 10th of every year. This movement initially began in Canada in 1975 in support of upholding prisoners' rights and to remember all of the people who have died unnatural deaths while inside. This movement sparked after the avoidable death of a gentleman named Eddie Nalon at Millhaven Institution in 1974. Prisoners' Justice Day is now an internationally observed day of remembrance and action to demand justice for the human rights violations committed by institutions.\n\nThe John Howard Society of Simcoe Muskoka and the Elizabeth Fry Society of Simcoe Muskoka are partnering to host a Prisoners' Justice Day event this year to commemorate and remember all of the people who have died unnatural deaths while incarcerated. The purpose of this event is to bring awareness to the injustices that incarcerated folks face every day\, and to stand in solidarity with incarcerated folks advocating for their human rights to be upheld.\n\nThis event will feature several guest speakers with lived experience who will share about their experiences\, speak about the importance of Prisoners' Justice Day\, and highlight the injustices that happen far too often inside carceral institutions.\n\n\n\nThis event will be hosted on Saturday\, August 10th\, from 11:30 AM-1:00 PM at Trinity Anglican Church (located at 24 Collier St\, Barrie\, ON).\n\nWe welcome all folks who are interested in attending this event! Please feel free to share this invitation to anyone you think may be interested in attending and learning about Prisoners' Justice Day.

SUMMARY:Footsteps To Freedom - Local Black History Bus Tour
DESCRIPTION:This impactful bus tour features 3 key stops in the learning journey of our local Black history in and around Simcoe County. We begin in Barrie at 9:30 am and travel to the Oro African Church\, a restored historical site. A local family descendant will provide an engaging history of the Black settlers who made a home in the surrounding area\, but the church brought the community together. The bus tour takes us over to the outskirts of Collingwood to the Sheffield Park Black History & Cultural Museum\, where we will meet another family descendant and tour the many small buildings containing artifacts\, memorabilia and recreations of the Black settler's early days in the area. A culturally inspired lunch will be served\, and a chance to wander the grounds at your own pace. We then return to Barrie but have a short stop at the Bethel Union Cemetery\, the first multi-cultural cemetery in Simcoe County. Here lies a beautiful monument to the many Black settlers and slaves who lived and worked in the area. The tour will take us back to Barrie\, where we started at approximately 4 pm. There will be toilet facilities at each location and food and water. The Bus Tour travels rain or shine\, so please dress for the weather and for walking on uneven ground.
