Excitement Looms As Registration For Junior Kindergarten Begins

Official Registration Begins January 27th

Some parents will be sobbing into a tissue, some will be doing a happy dance, and most will be doing both.

If your child is turning four years old in 2020, it’s time to register them for Junior Kindergarten.

Official registration for elementary schools is available on-line for students in the Simcoe County District School Board and Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board.

Both school boards try to make the process as easy and stress free as possible.

Once you have filled out the online registration, you can call ahead to your child’s school to arrange a pick up time for the “Welcome to Kindergarten” package along with information on a spring orientation.

Caregivers can visit the Catholic School Boards beginning today.

Due to job action on Monday January 27th, in school registration is not available for the public school board, however families can begin the Kindergarten registration process online immediately and visit the school in the future to complete the process.

Crystal Carbino with the public board says individual schools typically hold an information night in the spring, which allows children and caregivers the opportunity to get to know the atmosphere and meet faculty.

Carbino says its best to sign up before the spring, so you can be in the loop about the kindergarten orientation sessions. “We find those sessions are very helpful for families because you get information about how to prepare your child, and what you need to bring.”

Pauline Stevenson with the catholic board says a lot of planning and teaching assignment are done in the spring, so it’s best to register by then, “but of course we will never turn anyone away.”

If you aren’t sure what school your child is attending, there is a home school locater on the website for each school board.

If you wish to enroll a child in an out of boundary school, you will have to go through a few extra steps.

Stevenson says its best to contact the school board, who will then review your request for an out of bounds school. There’s criteria that must be factored in. For example, if the school you wish your child to attend is at capacity.

There is a boundary review exemption process on each boards websites as well.
