Update: 50 year old man dies in condominium fire in Barrie on Saturday

Ontario Fire Marshal says cause and origin of the fire is still under investigation

The Ontario Fire Marshal continues to investigate a fire at a condominium in southwest Barrie that claimed a life on Saturday night.

Steven Wilson, assistant deputy Ontario Fire Marshal, said in an email to Barrie 360 News that the victim is a 50 year old Barrie man.

Firefighters were called to a structure fire on Shadowood Road, in the area of Essa Road and Veterans Drive, just before 10 p.m.

Wilson said the origin and cause of the fire is still under investigation. He added that the fire is not considered suspicious.

Wilson confirmed that smoke alarms in the unit were functioning and alerted neighbouring residents to evacuate.

Wilson also praised the quick response of Barrie Fire which he said prevented the fire from spreading to neighbouring units.


Barrie Police and the fire department is investigating a blaze that happened Saturday night at a multiplex unit on Shadowood Road, in the area of Essa Road and Veterans Drive.

Yellow police tape is strung by the side and back of the residence and there is black debris from smoke by a lower level window that has been smashed out.

The Ontario Fire Marshal has been called in to assist with the investigation.
