Province spending $115 million to beef up home and virtual healthcare options

Funds to increase virtual care and remote monitoring programs

Queen’s Park has launched a new initative that would help hundreds of patients across Ontario access home healthcare, while freeing up much-needed hospital beds.

Premier Doug Ford said Wednesday his government is providing $115 million to establish the High Intensity Supports at Home program. It is expected to support 850 patients with high, complex care needs receive the care they need from the comfort at home. Funding will also go towards beefing up the province’s ability to provide virtual care options for patients across Ontario.

“With today’s modern medical advances and technology, and with the help of our dedicated nurses and personal support workers, we are ready to provide quality care for patients in their own homes and in their communities,” said Premier Ford. “This kind of care is not only critical to keeping patients safe and healthy during COVID-19, but also part of our government’s ongoing commitment to end hallway health care and ensure our hospitals are not overwhelmed.”

The High Intensity Supports at Home program provides integrated, team-based care and can include up to 11 hours a day of personal support and nursing services per patient. Of the $115 million, about $9.5m will go towards remote patient monitoring programs, allowing for easier delivery of remote patient care, monitoring, and symptom management.
