Public School Board providing free menstrual products at Simcoe County schools

Board to retrofit coin-operated machines

The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) has moved to make all menstrual products free at area schools.

The vote at Thursday evening’s meeting would ensure that each secondary school’s female and single-use washrooms are equipped with menstrual product dispensers that could be used at no cost to students.

Currently, many SCDSB secondary schools are outfitted with coin-operated dispensers that cost a quarter. Those machines are to be retrofitted, while new machines will be added to schools that lack such a device.

It is expected the move will come with an initial start-up cost of $30,000 for the retrofits and new machines, along with the products to fill them; yearly costs aren’t expected to exceed $5,000.
