Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit says just one symptom or concern of exposure can justify a COVID-19 test, but no one will be turned away

Some assessment centres are by appointment only

Amid calls for increased COVID-19 testing in Ontario, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) says it has updated its criteria to reflect who can now go and get tested. However, the SMDHU echos a statement made by Premier Doug Ford over the weekend that anyone who wants to get tested will not be turned away.

Testing is available for anyone with at least one symptom of COVID-19, even only mild ones. The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, cough, difficulty breathing, muscle aches, fatigue, headache, sore throat, or a runny nose. If you’re unsure if your symptoms fit the bill, take the Public Health Ontario self-assessment.

The Health Unit says those who are concerned they’ve come into contact with COVID-19 can now get tested as well. People who are at a greater risk of exposure to COVID-19 are also encouraged to seek out testing, including essential workers like those in grocery stores or the food processing industry.

Once you arrive at any one of the SMDHU’s assessment centres (listed below), you’ll be seen by a healthcare professional who will provide necessary care and instructions for follow up. You’re asked to bring a valid Ontario health card with you, if you have one, to speed up the process.

“No Ontarian who is symptomatic or is concerned they have been exposed to COVID-19 will be declined a test at an assessment centre,” reads a statement from the Health Unit.
