“This is not a good news story.” South Simcoe Police Release Festive RIDE Stats

Four out of Over Ten Thousand Charged With Drunk Driving

Over ten thousand vehicles were stopped during South Simcoe Police Festive RIDE checks, and while only 4 alcohol-impaired charged were laid, the Service’s Deputy Chief says this is not a favourable result.

“This is not a good news story,” said Deputy Chief Robin McElary-Downer, “The numbers clearly indicate there still exists a total disregard by some for drinking and drug impaired driving laws. How disturbing. However, we are firm in our resolve to road safety and will continue our year-round efforts, with the help of our good citizens, to apprehend impaired drivers.”

This year, officers also laid one drug-impaired driving charge this year, while none were laid last year. Fewer warn-range suspensions were handed out this year compared to last, while the number of Highway Traffic Act charges (speeding, seatbelt infractions, and so on) saw a major jump in 2019 compared to 2018.

The Festive RIDE program’s results are as follows, as per the South Simcoe Police Service. Results from 2018 are in brackets.
