“When the stars make you drool just like a pasta fazool, that’s amore,” Dean Martin wrote that because, in Napoli, where love is King, he imagined a boy meeting a girl for the first time and singing that as he falls in love.
You can imagine many Barrie residents singing that classic tune as they fell in love with their first dish of authentic Italian cuisine at Nino’s. This unpretentious Italian joint has been dishing out handmade classic’s in Barrie’s East end since 1973 when Nino first opened the doors. His son Luigi now runs the business with his wife, daughter and his own son Nino.
Luigi brought us into his kitchen and as he made fresh pasta he said, “we make everything from scratch.”. You can tell right away. He also told us about the origins of their skills and how nun’s helped form his father Nino’s abilities in the kitchen, “no one uses rosemary in their sauce, try this!” said Luigi. His passion for authentic Italian dishes is real.
The love for his family business and the people that frequent it is real. That pride and that love shines through in the dishes he turns out. “I want my customer’s mouth’s to dance,” he says with a smile.
If you are new to the area or simply forgot about Nino’s, be sure to visit. Be careful though, you may just fall in love and “dance down the street with a cloud at your feet.”
