You have to wear a mask into a store in Simcoe or Muskoka. Does the clerk? Not always

A few folks have noted on the Barrie 360 Facebook page they’ve seen store clerks going without masks, wondering why they’re exempt and others are not.

They’re not exempt. They’ve just got added layers.

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit’s mandatory mask order came into effect Monday of last week. In it, the directive stipulates anyone in an indoor public space must be wearing a mask.

However, store employees can go without the mask so long as they’re enclosed in or behind a protective barrier. This most commonly takes the form of a plexiglass shield, protecting both the customer and the employee from any moist droplets that could contain the COVID-19 virus.

The Health Unit points out employees could also remove their masks while within a section of the premises with no public access, like a storage or break room, so long as safe physical distancing can be maintained.
