Provincial police have charged two people in their 40s from Ottawa in connection with the theft of silver bars and coins.
The suspects were apprehended in Orillia last week.
Police say the silver shipment originated in London, Ontario, and was intended for the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa. Detectives from the Ontario Provincial Police investigated after being informed of precious metals being sold to a business in the Orillia area.
With assistance from the London and Ottawa police services, investigators determined that the metals being sold were previously reported stolen during the shipment earlier this month. It's estimated that the value of the metals is around $160,000.
The suspects have each been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.
They were released from custody and have a future court date.
The original theft investigation remains ongoing. The OPP asks any members of the public who may have information to contact DC BOTHMAN of the OPP Major Crime Unit at 705-326-3536, referencing occurrence E251137019.
