Barrie's landfill is closed for the rest of Friday afternoon due to a small fire within a wood waste pile.

The City says the closure was made out of an abundance of caution and the landfill is expected to reopen Saturday morning.

Friday's fire likely occurred due to natural buildup of heat in the wood pile during the decompositon process.

The City says its staff are on-site and working with Barrie Fire and Emergency Services to monitor and manage the situation.
