Barrie Transit riders could have to explore other ways of getting around.
The union representing Barrie Transit workers could be in a strike position as of Monday, March 23.
The transit system in Barrie is delivered under contract by MVT Canadian Bus Inc.
"While the city is not the employer, it has been working closely with the contractor and monitoring the situation to help ensure continuity of this important service for the community. The city remains hopeful that the Union (Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1775) and MVT will reach a negotiated settlement," according to a news release from the City of Barrie on Monday.
The city says there are plans in place to prioritize some essential transit services during the strike, but transit riders should be prepared to make alternative travel plans in advance of possible strike action.
If a strike occurs, the following service impacts are planned:
- Conventional Transit and Transit ON Demand:
No routes will operate except for a modified Route 8, running Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. (no weekends or holidays), operating approximately every 75 minutes.
- Specialized Transit:
Service will operate for essential medical appointments only (eg. dialysis), as service allows, from Monday to Saturday, 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- Fares:
No fares will be collected for any transit service operating during the strike. Space and availability may be limited.
- Barrie Allandale Transit Terminal:
The terminal will remain open. Other travel providers (eg. GO Train, Ontario Northland, etc.) could be disrupted or pick up/drop off locations may change.
- Bus Stop Maintenance:
Snow clearing and waste/recycling receptacle maintenance at bus stops and shelters will be impacted.
"Again, the city remains hopeful that the parties will reach a negotiated settlement. Updates will be provided to residents as the city is informed of any further information," the news release from the city stated.
