Another purpose-built rental housing development was announced by the City of Barrie on Wednesday, set to introduce 268 total units, 54 of them affordable, to the market.
The new development, proposed by Black Creek Group, will stand at 17 Sophia Street, near another ongoing development being built at the intersection of Sophia Street and Bayfield Street.
“This project reflects the strong partnership between the City and Black Creek Group to deliver more housing for Barrie residents," Barrie Mayor Alex Nuttall said in a release.
More than 770 affordable units have approved by the city, much of it thanks to housing incentive programs like the development charge waiver program. Since the program's first phase ended, it's been continued by councillors in a way to incentivize ownership.
Nuttall said at a separate housing announcement in May that the city is currently on pace to see between 2,500 and 3,500 new housing units begin construction this year, which is well above Barrie’s previous annual high of 1,970 units.
