No gimmes for this Barrie motorist.

Barrie Police were contacted by staff at a golf course on Monday about a suspected impaired driver.

Soon after the call, the driver was seen passed out at the wheel at the intersection of Big Bay Point Road and Fairview Road. There was yet another call about a vehicle stopped in the middle of the road with obvious signs of damage from a collision that occurred around 10:40 that night.

Police say another motorist tried to get the driver's attention when the vehicle backed up and turned onto Harvie Road.

Officers located the vehicle leaving a parking lot in the area of Big Bay Point Road and Leggott Avenue and pulled it over. While speaking with the driver, police say officers noted he displayed obvious signs of impairment, including glassy eyes, slurred speech and delayed movements.

The driver was arrested after failing a roadside breath test. More tests were administered at police headquarters, where it was confirmed the driver was nearly three times the legal limit.

The 51-year-old man was charged, his driver's licence was suspended for 90 days, and his vehicle was impounded.

"Every impaired driving charge represents a decision to put lives at risk, including your own. Make the right choice before getting behind the wheel," police said in a news release.
