Authorities in Durham Region have identified the police recruit who died in a car crash that also seriously injured another recruit on Tuesday.

Durham Region police say Tyrone Magbitang, one of its constables in training, died in the crash involving a sedan and transport truck in the Township of Malahide, near the Ontario Police College.

The other police recruit, who was travelling with Magbitang to a training session at the time, has not been identified.

Police say Magbitang joined the force in May 2023 as a special constable and was recruited to train as a police officer in April.

They say the 27-year-old's remains will be transported today from London, Ont., to the Centre for Forensic Sciences in Toronto, accompanied by members of the police force.

Police describe Magbitang as a dedicated and compassionate person who believed in making a positive difference in the community.

"Although his time with our service was far too short, Tyrone made a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him," Durham Region police said in a statement.

"He will be remembered for his kindness, professionalism, and the tremendous potential he brought to our organization."

News of the recruit's death prompted condolences from Ontario Premier Doug Ford and OPP Comissioner Thomas Carrique.

Police have asked the public to respect the privacy of Magbitang's friends, family and loved ones, and said the force was mourning alongside them.
