Jewelry among items stolen during distraction thefts in Bradford West Gwillimbury

South Simcoe Police say jewelry and other valuables were stolen during two similar distraction thefts in Bradford West Gwillimbury.

Both occurred over the past few days.

Police say the suspects, a male and female, were travelling in a vehicle when they approached individuals who were walking or standing outside and asked for directions. During the interaction, police say the suspects created a distraction, which allowed them to allegedly steal jewelry and other valuables without the victims realizing it until later.

"While stopping to help someone may seem like the right thing to do, it's important to remain cautious. Thieves often rely on kindness, trust, and distraction to create opportuities to steal," police said in a social media post.

If someone approaches you and the situation seems unexpected:

Stay aware of your surroundings.

Keep your valuables secure and out of sight whenever possible.

Maintain your personal space and avoid unnecessary physical contact with strangers.

Trust your instincts! If something doesn't feel right, end the interaction and move to a safe location.

"If you are the victim of a distraction theft, report it to police immediately. Prompt reporting can assist investigators and help prevent others from becoming victims" police stated.
