Toronto police say they charged a resident of a home who allegedly opened fire as suspects attempted to steal a vehicle from the driveway.

Police say they responded to an attempted car theft early Wednesday morning in a residential neighbourhood in Toronto's east end.

Police say the resident of the Scarborough home fired a gun during the incident.

They say the 37-year-old has been charged with recklessly discharging a firearm.

While no injuries were reported, police say a nearby home was damaged by the gunfire.

Police say the suspects fled before officers arrived.
