The County of Simcoe will assume ownership of Busby Centre properties at 88 and 90 Mulcaster Streets in Barrie.
In a news release on Thursday, the County said the acquisition of the properties will strengthen homelessness supports in the region.
"Current services and supports provided by the Busby Centre will continue to operate at 88 Mulcaster," according to the news release.
The County expects to begin exterior and property enhancements later this year, and additional planning will help determine the scope and timing of any future improvements to the buildings.
"Through planned renovations and improvements, the County will transform the site into a modern and dynamic facility designed to support the evolving needs of individuals experiencing homelessness and housing instability. Once complete, the revitalized site will offer housing-based programming alongside a range of wraparound supports and services, helping individuals access resources they need as they move toward safe, stable, and permanent housing," the County stated in the news release.
In a statement, the Busby Centre said this partnership represents an important opportunity to build on what each organization does best.
"The County of Simcoe can continue investing in and creating purpose-built spaces that support innovative housing and homelessness solutions, while the Busby Centre can focus on delivering and strengthening the programs, services, relationships, and supports that help people move toward housing stability."
The Busby Centre first opened its doors in 1993.
"This next chapter in The Busby Centre's long rich story challenges us to build on more than 30 years of experience while continuing to evolve our programs and services around the needs of the people we serve and the community," said Sara Peddle, executive director of The Busby Centre.
The County adds that while it intends to negotiate a lease with the Busby Centre, it is committed to providing the current space at 88 Mulcaster Street at no charge throughout the redevelopment and enhancement phase "to support the continued delivery of homelessness services in Barrie and the surrounding area."
The closing date is September 9, 2026, at which point the County will take possession of the properties.
