The Town of Wasaga Beach has unveiled an ambitious long-term vision that would transform the community from a popular summer getaway into a year-round recreation and tourism destination.

The newly released Destination Wasaga Master Plan, developed with funding from the Government of Ontario, outlines a strategy to revitalize the town's waterfront, downtown core, public spaces, transportation links and visitor attractions while preserving the natural features that have made Wasaga Beach one of Ontario's most recognizable destinations.

Town officials say the plan is guided by several key commitments, including maintaining public access to the beachfront, putting residents first, protecting environmentally sensitive areas, and ensuring tourism growth is carefully managed and sustainable.

Among the plan's guiding principles is a promise that the beach will remain public, ensuring residents and visitors continue to have access to the world's longest freshwater beach. The strategy also emphasizes environmental stewardship and Indigenous engagement to help protect dunes, shorelines, habitats and other natural systems while incorporating Indigenous perspectives into future projects.

Rather than focusing on attracting more visitors, the plan aims to create greater value from the millions of people who already visit Wasaga Beach each year. Officials say the goal is to encourage longer stays and more year-round visits while supporting local businesses, improving quality of life for residents and creating new economic opportunities.

The master plan is also intended to attract investment and strengthen the local economy. One major private-sector project already being considered is a premium Marriott-branded hotel proposed for the waterfront.

Several high-profile concepts are featured in the plan, including the potential return of the historic Dardanella as a modern, year-round performance and cultural venue. Another signature proposal is an iconic pedestrian bridge spanning the Nottawasaga River, creating a continuous connection along the beachfront for the first time.

Mayor Brian Smith said the vision reflects the community's desire to shape its own future.

"Great communities do not stand still - they make deliberate choices about the future they want to build. "Destination Wasaga is our community's bold vision, and with the continued support and partnership of the Province of Ontario, the Government of Canada and our other partners, we are ready to turn that vision into reality."

The plan will serve as a roadmap for future development, with individual projects subject to the appropriate planning, environmental, regulatory and financial approval processes before moving forward. Officials say implementation will be phased over time as funding and approvals are secured.
