The City is recognizing October 19 to 25 as Waste Reduction Week. One way the City supports a circular economy (a system where items are kept in circulation as long as possible) is through programs and initiatives that encourage residents to minimize and better manage their waste. To mark Waste Reduction Week, the City is offering the following two free activities:
STEAM Challenge (in partnership with the Barrie Public Library)
Wednesday, October 21, 2026, from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Barrie Public Library Downtown Branch (60 Worsley Street)
Discover the science of waste reduction through hands-on challenges and interactive learning! Join the City of Barrie Waste Management Team to explore what happens to your garbage, recycling, and organics after they leave the curb.
Ask a Waste Expert
Saturday, October 24, 2026 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Barrie Farmers’ Market (City Hall, 70 Collier Street)
Residents can drop by to “Ask a Waste Expert” about curbside waste programs, landfill services, and disposal options. Whether you have questions about organics, battery disposal, yard waste, garbage, or ways to reduce waste at home, our experts can help. Stop by to learn more about the services and resources available to Barrie residents and gain confidence in your sorting decisions.
In addition to these activities, City staff will also be at the Barrie Colts game at Sadlon Arena (ticket required) on October 22 from 6 to 8 p.m., to promote Waste Reduction Week. Attendees can test their waste-sorting knowledge with games and learn about waste management in Barrie.
The annual campaign for Waste Reduction Week in Canada began in 2001 by the Circular Innovation Council, a national, not-for-profit.
