Simcoe County Council decided that more was better at its Tuesday meeting and increased the number of affordable rental spaces at its Rose Street project from 176 to 215 units.
The nearly 5-acre property is the former Barrie OPP detachment in the area of Highway 400 and Bayfield Street, which was demolished, and was used last winter as a temporary homeless shelter.
The $217 million development will feature nine-and 11-storey towers, a parking garage as well as space for social, health and community partners.
Studio, one-two and three-bedroom units will be available.
"County Council recognizes the importance of creating more affordable rental spaces throughout our communities,” said Warden Basil Clarke. “Council approved the original vision for this site earlier this year but asked staff to bring back additional options to further utilize this opportunity. Yesterday, Council supported expanding the build as we continue to invest in strategies that build up our communities, through responsible and impactful solutions to address the housing crisis.”
Site preparation will begin early next year, with an estimated completion date in 2026-2027.
