Orillia OPP arrested and charged a man with impaired offences following a three-vehicle collision on Highway 11 in Oro-Medonte Tuesday.

Officers were called around 7:00 p.m. about the incident on the northbound side of the highway at Line 9.

"Officers attended the area and located lots of debris, vehicles blocking the highway and extensive guardrail damage," OPP said in a media release. "This caused one northbound lane to be closed for several hours. Luckily, no injuries have been reported as a result of this collision."

Police talked with the involved drivers, and when speaking with a male driver they said "he was displaying numerous signs of alcohol consumption."

A 34-year-old Orillia man has been charged with:

  • Operation while impaired- blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CC)

  • Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor contrary to section 42(1)(a) of the Liquor Licence Control Act
  • Drive motor vehicle, no currently validated permit contrary to section 7(1)(a) of the Highway Traffic Act

"The Orillia OPP reminds motorist to plan ahead when consuming alcohol or drugs. Use a designated driver, cab, rideshare, public transit or stay overnight," police added. "Any amount of alcohol or drugs can impact your ability to make sound judgements. In a split second you could ruin your future, injure or kill others."
