Public meeting to consider allowing up to four units on residential property in Barrie

City Council approves zero-based budget

News release - City of Barrie

Next week, the City of Barrie’s Affordability Committee will hold a public planning meeting to consider changing the current zoning by-law to allow up to four dwelling units on residentially-zoned parcels of land.

The purpose of this meeting is to provide the public with an opportunity to review the proposed amendments to the zoning by-law which would permit up to four dwelling units on residentially-zoned parcels of land within Barrie. The proposal also introduces ‘Additional Residential Units’ as a use, to align with provincial terminology, and includes standards for the same. The in-effect zoning by-law currently permits up to three dwelling units on a residential parcel as per Provincial legislation.

The public meeting, open to anyone, will be held in a virtual forum with electronic participation, and in person at City Hall, at 6 p.m. on December 13, 2023. Anyone is welcome to share their feedback on this proposed change, in the following ways:

  • If you’d like to provide oral comments (virtually or in-person) at the public meeting, please register in advance by emailing cityclerks@barrie.ca or calling 705-739-4220 x5500 during regular office hours before 12 p.m. on December 13. Once you register, you will be provided information from the Legislative Services Branch on how to make your submission.
  • If you’d like to send a written submission concerning this matter, please email or mail comments to cityclerks@barrie.ca or City Hall, 70 Collier Street, P.O. Box 400, Barrie, ON L4M 4T5 (attention: City Clerk). Written comments must be received by 12 p.m. on December 13.

The meeting can be viewed on the City’s YouTube channel.

No decisions will be made at this meeting. A staff report will be presented in early 2024 with recommendations for Council.
