'Peaceful resolution': Man apprehended after lengthy incident of 'person in crisis'

Crisis

Barrie police say a man is in custody after a lengthy incident, over 20 hours, involving a "person in crisis."

Peter Leon, communications coordinator with Barrie police, told Barrie 360 that the situation at Mapleview Drive and Yonge Street "has come to a peaceful resolution."

"We have one male who has been apprehended," Leon said. "Our investigation is continuing. We will be remaining to have a police presence in the area ... road closures will be taken down."

The situation was resolved shortly after 3:30 p.m.

Police were initially called to the area around 5 p.m. on Monday.

Leon says the man was in a vehicle in a parking lot.

"We utilized a significant number of resources within the Barrie Police Service, which included crisis negotiators, our tactical support unit, our canine unit, our front line officers, and we were assisted also by the Peel Regional Police," Leon said.

"I think the biggest thing that we need to recognize and realize is that we were dealing with a person who was in crisis," Leon stated.

"We know that it was a very long day for a lot of people who reside in that area, and we can appreciate and understand that their day may have been impacted by this police activity - but again - I think we cannot lose sight of the fact that this incident resolved itself in a peaceful manner. And most importantly, there is no loss of life and the individual hopefully will be able to get some care and assistance."

According to Leon, the man they apprehended is from Barrie and is in his mid to late 40s.

Roads in the area were closed and GO transit services were impacted during the ordeal.
