The City of Barrie will be making transportation improvements on Bayfield Street and wants to hear from residents on their current experience and what changes the City should prioritize for the future.
The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is planning to replace the existing Bayfield Street interchange and crossing structure starting tentatively in 2026. The MTO’s project includes improvements extending from Grove Street to Coulter Street that will improve traffic operations. The City is examining additional improvements that could be incorporated with MTO’s project, focusing on active transportation and improvements that are required to support MTO’s project.
The first phase of this project is a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Study, which is done prior to detailed design of the work, property acquisition, utility relocations, and construction. This Study will assess near-term and long-term transportation improvements that support all modes of travel, including pedestrians, transit users, cyclists, and motorists. This project will build upon recommendations in Barrie’s Transportation Master Plan.
Property owners, businesses, residents, and tenants within the study area will receive notices in the mail. The City invites residents to get involved and provide input on the Bayfield Street project in the following ways:
- Register for project updates and news.
- Provide input through the project website via the idea board or by using the mapping tool, or ask a question.
- Complete the survey to provide your feedback on your experience with Bayfield Street today and suggestions for the future.
- Participate in Public Information Centre (PIC) events. These events will provide information and gather public input. Three PICs are planned for this project, with the first scheduled to occur in late March.
After gathering public input and following completion of the assessment, the City will start detailed design plans, subject to Council and budget approvals. Construction of the City’s improvements are currently anticipated to start in approximately 2029, following completion of the MTO’s project.
