Ontario government to ban tolls on provincial highways

The Ontario government says it is looking to ban future tolls on provincial highways.

This ban would apply to the Don Valley Parkway and Gardiner Expressway in Toronto once uploaded to the province, as well as the 400-series highways.

The change will not affect Highway 4-0-7, whose tolls are set by private company Highway 4-0-7 E-T-R.

The government says it is introducing legislation on the matter next week.

Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria says it is part of a broader set of changes to lower the cost of driving in the province, including a permanent freeze on driver’s licence and photo card fees, and the automatic renewal of licence plates.
