Barrie police say a driver is facing impaired and weapon charges after they collided with a hydro pole.
Officers say they were notified about the single-vehicle crash on Bayview Drive and Springhome Road this morning at 1:40 a.m.
"A pickup truck was observed in a collision with a hydro pole located on the northeast corner of the intersection," Barrie police said in a news release.
"The unconscious driver, a 41-year-old male from Barrie, was being tended to by paramedics and was later revived. Police immediately determined that the driver was impaired by drug."
They say he was placed under arrest and sent to a hospital where the investigation continued.
"Prior to departing, a satchel that the male was wearing was searched and it was found to contain a substance believed to be cocaine and at the hospital the male was found to be in possession of what was believed to be methamphetamine," officers said.
"Also located in the pickup, and in very close proximity to the driver, was a fully loaded semi-automatic firearm."
After being treated at the hospital, he was put into police custody and transported to Barrie Police Headquarters.
He was charged with:
- Operation while impaired
- Dangerous operation
- Possession of a Schedule I Substance- Cocaine
- Possession of a Schedule I Substance – Methamphetamine
- Careless Storage of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition
- Careless Use of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition
- Possession of Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm.
The accused is waiting for a bail hearing later today.
