Two people have been charged with impaired driving after provincial police received a report shortly after 1 p.m. on Friday that a resident of a local care home in Orillia left with two individuals without the staff's knowledge.

About 45 minutes later, the vehicle and everyone was located by police, still in Orillia.

The resident was treated by paramedics for preacutionary reasons and has since been returned to the care home.

As part of the investigation, police determined the resident left the facility consensually with the known individuals.

Police allege the two individuals with the resident had been driving while impaired by alcohol.

A 39-year-old female from Orangeville has been charged with:

  • Operation while impaired-blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Operation while impaired-alcohol contrary to section

A 50-year-old male from Barrie has been charged with:

  • Operation while impaired-blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Operation while impaired-alcohol contrary to section

Police said names of the individuals will not be released to protect the identity of the resident.

Both accused have a court date next month.
