Google has just launched a new app that will help the visually impaired gain information about the world around them. Using the camera and sensors in Android devices, Lookout can recognize objects and text and give the user spoken feedback, earcons, and other queues about what it is seeing.
The Lookout app has a number of useful features including a document scanner that will scan text and read it out loud (there is also a quick read mode where you simply need to point the camera at the text), a food label scanner that can do things like distinguishing between a can of corn and a can of beans, and an explore mode that gives the user information about objects their immediate surroundings.
You can download the Lookout app right now as long as you are running Android 6.0 or later on devices with more than 2GB of RAM. It also works in French, Italian, German, and Spanish.
