While this year's Winterfest and Family Day activities had to be put on hold, the City of Barrie is presenting Hello Winter, a month of fun activities and programming that you can enjoy safely from home.
Some of the virtual activities that will help keep your family entertained throughout the month are nature-based adventures, how-to videos, behind-the-scenes tours, and performances with tons of local organizations. Here are some of the activities and events you can look forward to:
Community Snow Sculpture Challenge
The City of Barrie is issuing a Snow Sculpture Challenge to the community and wants everyone to head outside to build your best and most creative snow sculpture. Lights, carving, and props all get the green light! Once you have completed your masterpiece you can take and photo and post it here and it just might be shared on the City of Barrie's social media channels.
MacLaren Art Centre
Along with showcasing some Short Films for Families like It's Snow, Snow Cat, Stories from Our Land: How to Build an Igloo, the MacLaren Art Centre is hosting a Virtual Family Sunday where you will explore mixed-media printing and collage techniques and create an acrylic painting exploring cool colour combinations. The event is free, but be sure to register beforehand!
Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority
Dedicated to the preservation of a healthy environment and working with the community to help protect the water, land, and future, the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority will show everyone how to appreciate the environment with help from their nature educators and through fun activities for all ages.
Speaking of Wildlife
If you love animals you won't want to miss Speaking of Wildlife's presentations where you'll get to meet some of their furry and feathered friends and learn all about their life in the winter. You will also get a behind the scenes tour of the Speaking of Wildlife facility!
The Songwriter Series Virtual Music Festival
This special musical presentation features a diverse number of artists and songwriters including The Darcys, Haviah Mighty, Kaia Kater, Lydia Persaud, Shawnee, Shan Vincent de Paul, B. Knox, Sam Johnston, and Juno winner Serena Ryder. The Songwriter Series Virtual Music Festival will also be hosted by award-winning broadcaster, Tom Power.
As part of Hello Winter, the City is promoting, showcasing, and highlighting tons of things to do in the community this winter to help you enjoy and celebrate the season, stay active, and fight off the winter blues. Check back often as new activities and videos will be added all month.
