Board games can definitely be a fun way to pass the time, but some can do more for your brain health than you might think. One of those amazing games is Scrabble!
For starters, Scrabble has been known to improve memory by increasing brain plasticity and keeping cells active. This is especially helpful for elders to avoid brain degeneration. It's not just for the elderly, though! Studies show that it can also boost brain development in children and adolescents!
An increased vocabulary is the most obvious thing you'll walk away with from a few games of Scrabble. You might see new words from your opponent, spot a few new words while you're checking the dictionary, or maybe you'll just look up some new words to give you that extra edge in your next game.
Lastly, Scrabble can be a tough game. If you're new to it, many people can feel frustrated during their first few games. However, pushing past that initial strain and mental block can help build your mental toughness and build perseverance. Most times, if something is hard, it's worth seeing it through!
So, where can you play this wonderful game? Well, it's easy enough to pick up a board, but what might be a little tougher is finding an opponent. Thankfully, The Barrie Public Library hosts a Scrabble Club for players of all levels! So whether you're just learning or want to test yourself against a seasoned professional, you'll have some fun and find an opponent who's just right for you!
