Superman will be the first film in the Gunn- Saffran period at DC Studios.
It's been announced that "Superman: Legacy" is part of co-chairs James Gunn and Peter Saffran's overhaul of the superhero universe.
On Twitter, Gunn explained that he hesitated to take on a Superman project until he had a clear vision.
"Then a bit less than a year ago, I saw a way in, in many ways centering around Superman's heritage - how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes." he said
He goes on to say he wasn't sure about directing the film but is excited to get started.
"But, the long and the short of it is, I love this script, and I'm incredibly excited as we begin this journey."
Yes, I’m directing Superman: Legacy to be released on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt told me when he saw the release date he started to cry. I asked him why. He said, “Dude, it’s Dad’s birthday.” I hadn’t realized. pic.twitter.com/ohQNV8nI4g

The news comes several months after it was announced that Henry Cavill would not return to the Superman role.
At the time, the "Man of Steel" actor said, "This news isn't the easiest, but that's life," Cavill wrote. "The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build."
And that looks to be exactly what Gunn and Saffan are doing, but there has yet to be a word on casting.
The studio says the movie is expected out July 11, 2025.
