The City of Barrie will recognize Pollinator Week from June 20 to 26.
Pollinator Week is an annual event celebrated across the world in support of pollinator health. Did you know that birds, bats, bees, butterflies, beetles, and other small mammals that pollinate plants are responsible for bringing us one out of every three bites of food?
Pollinator Week is a time to learn about the importance of pollinators and spread the word about what we can do to protect them.
The City is offering the following activities for this year’s celebration:
- Open Air Dunlop: Kick Off-Event
June 18, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Meridian Place and Heritage Park
Residents can take part in painting a “Bee Way,” nature play activities for kids, and educational partners will be on-site offering activities.
- Native Plant Walks
June 21 (1 to 2:30 p.m.) and June 23 (10 to 11:30 a.m.) at Sunnidale Park
Meet at the Dorian Parker Centre and go on a hike to learn about native plants, pollinators, and the natural history of the park. Pre-registration is required.
- Pic-a-Pollinator Photo Contest
Submit a photo of a pollinator for your chance to win
The winner will receive a butterfly house and have their photo featured on the City’s website and social media channels.
As well, additional bee hotels will be installed in various park locations around the city during Pollinator Week.
The City of Barrie was officially designated as a Bee City on June 24, 2019. Last month, a motion was approved to support the efforts of Nature Barrie to apply to Nature Canada on the City’s behalf to become certified as a Bird-Friendly City.
