Child and officer 'narrowly missed' in impaired driving incidents in Innisfil

South Simcoe Police - SNOW

South Simcoe Police say they've charged two with impaired driving after a child and an officer were narrowly missed from being struck in separate incidents.

On Tuesday, July 12, just before 12 p.m., police responded to a report of a vehicle that had entered the water at the end of Mapleview Drive in the Town of Innisfil.

Upon arrival, officers say they learned that a pickup truck drove through the yellow steel gates at the end of the road, travelled down the embankment, and entered the water.

They say the vehicle narrowly missed a child who was playing in the water, and the park was full of other families enjoying the park at the time.

As a result, a 45-year-old Mattawa man was charged with dangerous operation, and operation while impaired.

The accused's licence was suspended for 90 days, and his vehicle impounded for 45 days.

And on Monday, July 11, around 12:20 p.m., officers were conducting traffic control in a construction area at the Innisfil Beach Road and 5th Sideroad intersection.

Officers say they were standing outside their vehicles wearing full police uniforms, and reflective safety vests. They say they saw a vehicle heading northbound at high speeds towards the intersection, and an officer, who attempted to direct the vehicle, narrowly missed being struck.

Police were eventually able to stop the driver.

A 28-year-old Barrie woman faces multiple charges including impaired driving.

Her licence was suspended for 90 days, and her vehicle impounded for seven days.
