Charges laid in Bradford shooting incident

Police had said there was a physical altercation between two men and shots were fired

An arrest has been made in connection with a reported shooting in Bradford.

South Simcoe Police say they were dispatched to the "sound of gunshots" in the early hours of Friday, Apr. 29, 2002 in the area of Simcoe Road and Centre Street. When officers got to the scene, they seized several shell casings from the road. There were no injuries reported.

At the time, police said there was an altercation between two men that turned physical and ended in shots being fired by one of them.

After an extensive investigation, police identified a suspect and on Tuesday arrested and charged a 27-year-old Newmarket man with numerous firearm offences including:

  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Discharge firearm with intent to endanger life
  • Assault with a weapon

The suspect is being held pending a bail hearing.

Police say the investigation is ongoing to determine further information relating to the identity of the victim(s) and the possible motive behind the shooting.
