Despite the Crown seeking a 30-month prison term and a five-year driving ban, a judge handed down a conditional two-year sentence to 20-year-old Jacob Throop on Tuesday in connection with a collision last summer that killed a Georgian College international student from India.

The court heard that 19-year-old Varsil Patel was struck by a speeding car as he crossed Big Bay Point Road at Leggott Avenue around 10 p.m. on July 21, 2023.

Barrie police charged Throop with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and failure to stop after a collision causing death.

Throop pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death.

As part of his sentence, he must do 200 hours of community service and has been banned from driving for four years.

The court was told that Patel was hit by the car as he crossed Big Bay Point Road on his way to work.

As well, it was learned in court that Throop was not a fully licenced driver at the time of the collision, and 10 days prior to striking Patel, he had been convicted of speeding and having illegal tinting on the windows of his vehicle.
