Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid charges in connection with a police-involved shooting in Innisfil.
On August 15, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said South Simcoe Police officers responded to a home on Shoreview Drive regarding a family dispute. There was an interaction involving two men outside the residence, according to the province's police watchdog, and four officers discharged their firearms at the two 19-year-olds.
Both men were transported to the hospital where one of them was pronounced dead.
At the request of the South Simcoe Police Service, the OPP began investigating the circumstances leading up to the arrival of police and the immediate situation at the scene when officers got there.
As a result of the investigation, police have charged a 19-year-old Innisfil man with the following offences:
- Assault Causing Bodily Harm,
- Assault with a Weapon,
- Assault Peace Officer with a Weapon, as per section 270.01(1) - four counts
- Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle, as per section 320.13(1)
The accused has been released and is scheduled to appear in Bradford Provincial Court in January.
The SIU continues to investigate the circumstances regarding the police-involved shooting.
The SIU investigates cases involving police where there has been a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
