11 proven tips for crafting a standout resume

Statistics show that 75% of resumes are never seen by human eyes. Why? Because most of the resumes are filtered out by applicant tracking systems (ATS) — software that scans cover letters and resumes for keywords and phrases related to the job. Not to mention, employers can receive 100s of applications per job posting. That means standing out is more important than ever.

To make sure you get to the top of the resume pile, consider using some of these tips and tricks:

1. Tailor your resume for every job

A generic resume won’t do you any favors. Customize your document to align with each job description by mirroring the language, keywords, and qualifications listed in the posting. This improves your chances of passing ATS filters and connects your experience directly to the employer's needs.

2. Start with a strong summary statement

Open with a concise summary at the top of your resume that highlights your top skills, career goals, and key accomplishments. This immediately shows hiring managers why you’re a great fit.

3. Highlight your contributions and impact

Instead of simply listing job duties, focus on how you’ve added value in your previous roles. Explain what you accomplished or how you improved processes, supported colleagues, or solved challenges.

For example, instead of saying “Answered customer inquiries,” try “Provided timely support to customers, ensuring satisfaction and repeat business.”

4. Showcase transferable skills

Even if you’re switching industries or don’t have direct experience for a job, emphasize the skills you’ve gained that are relevant to the position. For instance, teamwork, communication, problem-solving, or technical proficiency can make a strong impression. Tailor this section to align with the job description to demonstrate your readiness for the role.

5. Select a professional format

Keep your layout clean and readable with consistent font styles (e.g., Arial or Calibri) and sizes. Stick to a reverse chronological format, listing your most recent experience first.

6. Include relevant keywords

Research industry-specific buzzwords or phrases in the job description and incorporate them naturally into your resume. This helps both ATS and human reviewers see you as a match.

7. Limit your resume to 1-2 pages

With so many resumes to look over, employers appreciate when you’re concise. Focus on recent and relevant roles while leaving out unrelated early career positions unless they showcase transferable skills.

8. Incorporate a skills section

Create a dedicated section for hard and soft skills relevant to the job, such as proficiency in software, languages, or leadership abilities.

9. Don’t forget your online presence

Add links to your LinkedIn profile or portfolio (if applicable). Studies show that recruiters screen candidates online 70% of the time. By providing links, you can help streamline the process and guide them where to go.

10. Avoid common resume mistakes

Steer clear of clichés like “detail-oriented” or “team player.” Instead, demonstrate those qualities through specific examples in your experience.

11. Proofread like a pro

Even one typo can make you seem careless. Use tools like Grammarly and have a trusted friend or mentor review your resume for errors and inconsistencies.

Your resume is your first impression

Your resume isn’t just a document — it’s a marketing tool that represents your own personal brand. Take the time to personalize it, showcase your achievements, and align it with the needs of the job you want.

A great resume won’t just get you noticed … it will open doors to the opportunities you deserve. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting out, these tips will ensure your resume stands out from the pile.
