The weather gods will show no mercy.

After a winter of mostly lake-effect snow squalls in our neck of the woods, the first major winter storm of the season is about to run roughshod over southern and parts of northern Ontario.

Environment Canada says snow beginning late this afternoon will be at its heaviest overnight, dumping between 20 and 30 cm and a little less in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA)

Winter storm and snowfall warnings have been posted from North Bay to the GTA, while a freezing rain warning is in effect for the Windsor and Chatham areas in southwestern Ontario.

The storm will begin to ease Thursday morning in our region, but forecasters say the wind will howl, with gusts to 70 km/h, and there is a threat of snow squalls Thursday night and Friday.

Two more storm systems could make an impact at the weekend, with much colder air pouring in on Family Day Monday, with the threat of more snow squalls.

Police are advising motorists that if they don't have to travel during the storm that it would be wise to stay put and hunker down.

In anticipation of severe weather, GO Transit has made changes to its train schedule on the Barrie line for Thursday.
