Updated April 2, 2025 @ 5:19pm

All streets in Barrie are now open allowing access to traffic. City crews and additional certified tree service contractors are now working hard to clean up debris from City-owned trees,  removing debris on sidewalks and roadways (collecting downed materials and branches, cautioning off and inventorying damaged trees, etc.) based on priority and safety.  There are more than 23 crews out daily doing cleanup, with more to come soon.

The City is responsible for clearing up debris from street trees planted on the area of City-owned land between the property owner’s front property line and the street curb. These areas can be:

  • on the boulevard (between the sidewalk and the curb).
  • within a set distance from the curb, in instances where there is no sidewalk. Note this distance varies and is dependent on the individual property limits.

Residents are reminded to please stay out of trails and treed areas in City parks, and refrain from attempting cleanup on your property if you feel the area remains unsafe due to continued falling branches.

Residents are asked not to drag large, unbundled debris from damaged trees on private property to the curb or road. Unbundled brush or oversized branches will not be collected by curbside collection trucks as it can damage collection equipment and poses a health and safety risk for drivers. Brush or oversized branches can be dropped off at the landfill site, where the City is waiving residential brush tipping fees until May 2. To support the storm cleanup, the City is also extending hours at the Barrie Landfill as follows:

Thursday, April 3 – 8:30 am to 6:30 pm

Friday, April 4 – 8:30 am to 6:30 pm

Saturday, April 5 – 8:30 am to 6:30 pm

Sunday, April 6 – 8:30 am to 3:30 pm

More information about the landfill is available at barrie.ca/landfill.

The City’s curbside collection contractor, Emterra, is responsible for collecting yard waste.  The City has arranged for additional trucks to assist with yard waste collection as a result of the ice storm cleanup. Residents are encouraged to place brush curbside as soon as possible as special pickups may not align with regular waste collection days. Brush can be bundled or placed in a container no larger than 120 L (with handles) or a paper leaf and yard waste bag. Please ensure brush bundles are:

  • no larger than 1.2m (4ft) in length
  • no larger than 0.3m (1ft) in diameter
  • no heavier than 20kg (45lbs) in weight
  • have limbs no more than 7cm (3in) in diameter each (and bundled per above)

Although additional trucks will continue to assist with the collection of storm debris, we ask residents to be patient.

As extensive cleanup operations continue throughout Barrie, the City is continuously assessing available resources and potential additional services to further assist with cleanup. Information will be shared as details are confirmed.
