A strong smell from a home prompted a neighbour on Carlton Street in Orillia to contact Ontario Provincial Police.

When officers arrived at the home on Wednesday afternoon, police say they found an extensive amount of pet food outside the residence.

After several attempts were made to contact someone without success, officers made a forced entry into the home and then contacted firefighters to attend the residence with hazmat suits.

Animal welfare was also alerted, and police say they removed several distressed animals in need of medical care.

Police say the investigation is ongoing with the assistance of Animal Welfare Services.
