In a dynamic fusion of poetry, hip-hop, and community spirit, Midland is gearing up for its first official hip-hop event at the Midland Cultural Centre (MCC). Spearheaded by Barrie’s poet laureate Tyneisha Thomas, also known as Ty the Poet, the show “Rap Is Poetry” is set to bring a vibrant mix of lyrical art and performance to town on July 26, from 3 to 5 p.m.
The event continues a journey that began in 2022 when Thomas launched the series in Barrie after receiving the Tourism Spark grant to host poetic concerts across Simcoe County. After successful shows in Collingwood and Barrie—including a sold-out performance at the Five Points Theatre—Midland is the latest stop on this cultural tour.
"This might actually be the first official hip-hop event at the MCC," Thomas noted, adding that the show will blend entertainment with education through performances and historical storytelling about Canadian hip hop and poetry.
Joining her on stage will be emerging artist Toblarone, who released his debut single Laugh Now, Cry Later earlier this year. Reflecting on the process behind the song, he shared, “I started writing that song as soon as I was supposed to finish work… I almost lost my job over that.” The risk paid off—he now has a full-length project called Volatile available on all streaming platforms.
The lineup includes a diverse range of talent from Simcoe County: Innisfil’s Priscilla, Toronto transplant Lindsay, and Midland locals Amy Ray and Dave Walker. Two members of The Boomboxerz dance crew and Midland’s own Sound Wave also bring high-energy performances spanning genres from hip-hop to indie rock.
Tickets are $20 (or two for $30) and can be purchased via the MCC website or by contacting Ty directly at tythepoetess@outlook.com. The event is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Midland and promises a family-friendly experience that highlights arts, culture, and the power of local voices.
With rhythm, passion, and poetry, this is more than just a concert—it's a celebration of community creativity and a step toward cultural expansion in Simcoe County.
