The City of Barrie is pleased to announce the completion of the Duckworth Street Improvements and Grove Street East Watermain project, a major infrastructure investment that improves road safety, active transportation, and critical underground services in Barrie’s east end.

The project included full reconstruction of Duckworth Street from Bell Farm Road to St. Vincent Street, and the installation of a new watermain on Grove Street from Duckworth Street to Nelson Street. Work was completed in three phases, with the final phase now complete.

“This work is part of our commitment to modernizing Barrie’s infrastructure – both above and below ground,” said Mayor Alex Nuttall. “In addition to upgrading aging water and sewer systems, these improvements support safer streets, better traffic flow, and more options for walking and cycling.”

Project highlights include:

• New watermain and sanitary sewer replacements

• Stormwater upgrades to improve drainage

• Road widening and new dedicated bike lanes

• New sidewalks, curbs, and fresh pavement

• Intersection upgrades, including new permanent traffic signals at Codrington and Duckworth

The project was initiated through a 2014 Municipal Class Environmental Assessment to evaluate how to better support active transportation along Duckworth Street. The final design carried forward this vision while also addressing aging infrastructure below ground.
