Barrie police were busy writing up tickets during a 10-day traffic safety initiative from Sept. 2 to 12, focused on traffic safety and awareness in around city schools.

There were 127 provincial offences notices issued and 64 cautions during the campaign.

"This puts the message out there to slow down," says Peter Leon, Barrie police communications coordinator. "Our presence is always year-round in the schools, but in the first few weeks, it's a reminder that police are out there making sure everybody gets to school safely."

Among those charged during the traffic campaign was a 16-year-old student who left a high school on Cundles Road East, and their vehicle was clocked travelling 98 km/h in a posted 50 zone.

Leon says fines can be increased if you are caught speeding in a school zone. But as responsible motorists, he says drivers need to be aware of what's happening around them, be observant of the signs, and if they are travelling in a school zone, then slow down.

"For others who choose to break the law, it's going to be a lesson learned outside the classroom," he added.
